Police: Victim in SR 44 fatal motorcycle crash identified

Eastbound lanes of SR 44 west of I-95 overpass close due to crash

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – New Smyrna Beach police are investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle Friday on State Road 44 near the intersection with I-95.

Officers said the crash happened as the driver of a sedan made a left turn from the westbound lane of S.R. 44 to access the I-95 southbound onramp, hitting a motorcyclist who was traveling eastbound on S.R. 44.

The motorcyclist, Stanley Stern Jr., 34, of New Smyrna Beach, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Criminal charges against the driver of the sedan are pending the outcome of the investigation, police said.

Police said the eastbound lanes of S.R. 44, west of the I-95 overpass, were closed Friday night.

Traffic heading east on S.R. 44 was being detoured and were to use North Airport Road through Venetian Bay to Pioneer Trail, police said.
