ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The Orange County Sheriff's Office is waiting for new test kits for synthetic marijuana new kits could lead to more arrests.
When Local 6 went undercover and purchased a product that resembled synthetic marijuana, not even a veteran law enforcement officer could tell us if it was legal or not.
"I don't know," said Sgt. Chris Moore, who heads an undercover narcotics unit at OCSO.
Moore says his unit has come across questionable products just like Local 6 and didn't know for sure if the product was illegal because they had to send it off to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to be tested.
Testing takes nearly a month, and by the time they got the results, often the retailer where they got it no longer sold it.
There are more than 100 types of synthetic marijuana banned by the state.
Now the sheriff's office is hoping new field test kits will help. The kits are the same tests officers currently use to test for marijuana and they will soon be made to test synthetic marijuana.
They give an immediate reading--and could give law enforcement probable cause to make an immediate arrest.
Deputies expect to have the kits in the next few weeks.
