Pulse protester's wife tries, fails to raise money online

Money instead raised for OnePulse Foundation

ORLANDO, Fla. – The wife of a man who was arrested while protesting outside of Pulse during the one-year remembrance event outside of the gay nightclub has set up an online fundraiser to support her husband.

Rather than donate to the protester's account, online benefactors are giving their money to a rival GoFundMe account designed to aid the OnePulse Foundation.

Daniel Maguire, 36, was at Pulse Monday holding a large homophobic sign and continued to shout anti-gay slogans even as gatherers chanted "love over hate" to drown out their bigotry.

Orlando Police noticed a crowd of about 50 people surrounded a protester and feared an altercation would take place, so they asked the man to move away.

Maguire tried to intervene, telling the officers that that he and the other man wanted to get off the sidewalk and back into the crowd in front of Pulse.

The officer told Maguire that the crowd was emotional and that it would be in his best interest to back away.

"Are you going to arrest me if I walk in there?" Maguire asked the officer while walking toward the nightclub, according to the police report.

The officer put up his arm in an attempt to stop Maguire.

"I told the defendant that he could not enter the area where the memorial events were continuing as it was likely to cause a breach of the peace and jeopardize the safety of everyone in the immediate area," the officer wrote in the report. "The defendant disobeyed this order on two separate occasions by attempting to walk around me towards the crowd around Pulse."

Maguire kept resisting and pushing his weight into the officer, so the officer pushed him to the ground, where he was handcuffed, the report said.

Maguire was booked into the Orange County Jail on charges of breach of peace and resisting an officer without violence.

He has since bonded out. The same day as his arrest, Maguire's wife, Jasmine Maguire, created a Fundly account to help pay for her husband's bond.

"You should support and look to protect Dan's right to exercise his belief and speak of his convictions, in that way you are not only supporting and preserving Dan’s rights to live out his beliefs, you are ALSO supporting your rights to do the same in whatever convictions you hold," Jasmine Maguire wrote on Facebook.

So far, that account has garnered $2 -- $1 each from a pair of anonymous donors.

Instead, a counter GoFundMe was started Wednesday titled "Love Will Triumph by Daniel Maguire." All donations from that account are slated to benefit the OnePulse Foundation.

Do-gooders contributing to that account have raised more than $2,000 and they expressed their love and support for the LGBTQ community in the comment section.

"Love will always be better than hate," one donor wrote.

"Hate sucks. Love is love," another chimed in.
