Ocala social security office evacuated over chemical odor

Hazardous materials situation investigated

OCALA, Fla. – The social security office in Ocala was evacuated due to a hazardous materials investigation.

Authorities were investigating a report of an unknown chemical odor in the building on Silver Springs Boulevard.

According to Ocala Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Martin Ortiz, 40 employees and approximately 40 customers were evacuated from the facility while firefighters investigated and ventilated the premises. Two Social Security Administration employees complained of eye irritation and were evaluated by paramedics, according to a release.

Firefighters reported to the building at 10:45 a.m. Thursday and it was reopened within the hour. The cause of the odor was not identified.
