Ocoee purse-snatching suspect appears in court

Prosecutors to decide whether to charge teen as adult beginning Tuesday

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – There was no sympathy from a judge for a 14-year-old boy accused of knocking down a grandmother and stealing her purse.

The teenager, Gary Cox, was in juvenile court Saturday after his arrest this week. The question now is if he will face charges as an adult.

Gary's grandmother was with him in court Saturday, saying her grandson is only 14 and should not be charged as an adult. The judge said that is up to the State Attorney's Office.

Charlotte Dunaway, 74, suffered major injuries when, according to police, Gary slammed her to the ground in an attempt to grab her purse Aug. 15 inside an Ocoee Publix.

"The injuries I sustained from what he did to me are every bit as serious as they would have been if he were a 35-year-old man," Dunaway said.

Dunaway told Local 6 she's relieved Cox was arrested but worries he'll be back on the street soon.

"Maybe if he has some time in jail then he could reform his life," said Dunaway.

Police said Cox confessed to the crime. He has been charged with other crimes in Orange County, Orlando and Ocoee, according to police.

Prosecutors will decide whether or not to charge Gary as an adult beginning Tuesday.

Gary is being held at the Juvenile Detention Center in Orange County.
