Officer helped elderly woman who ran out of gas, police say

LONGWOOD, Fla. – The Longwood Police Department said one of its officers helped an elderly woman who was stranded after running out of gas.

The LPD said Jesse Smeresky responded to a call of a disabled car in the travel lanes of State Road 17-92 near Lake Kathryn Drive in Longwood on Jan. 31. Smeresky found an elderly woman stranded without help.

According to the Police Department, Smeresky borrowed a fuel can from a landscaper in the area and bought the woman gas at a nearby gas station. Police said Smeresky also gave the woman money to buy enough gas to get home.

"This act demonstrates the level of compassion and commitment Officer Smeresky has for the members of our community and those who travel through it.," the department said in a statement. "His generous actions serve as an example to all."
