Officers thank boy for kind letters after Pulse shooting

Boy greeted at OIA for Orlando vacation

ORLANDO, Fla. – When 7-year-old Zachary Becerra landed at Orlando International Airport for his vacation, he immediately thought he was in trouble after a group of Orlando Police officers greeted him at the gate.

"When I came off the plane it was like 100 police officers ready to meet me," Zachary said. "It was weird."

But the officers weren't there to take this seven-year-old from Brooklyn to jail, they were there to say thank you.

"Zachary is a special little boy," said Orlando Police Sergeant Wanda Miglio in a video OPD tweeted out.

Following the shooting at Pulse nightclub, Zachary sent Orlando police officers hundreds of letters of support.

"To tell them thank you for your hard work," Zachary said.

And to thank him for his kind words, officers came to greet Zachary and return the favor. They came bearing gifts and lots of love.

"So we are here to greet him as he's here to go to Disney World," Miglio said.

It's a well-deserved and much-needed vacation. That's because for the last year and half Zachary and his single mom, Rosa Ortiz have been spending every Saturday personally thanking officers.

"My only day off, which is Saturday, we would set something up with every precinct. We would do three or four precincts a day," Ortiz said.

It was an idea that started back in December of 2014, after NYPD officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were killed in the line of duty.

"He was very sad," Ortiz said thinking back to the day. "He started to cry and he was like, 'Mom, I want to do something.'"

So Ortiz thought of the cards and Zachary thought of the theme - superheroes.

"Because to him, officers are superheroes," Ortiz said.

"They do great stuff and make great plans," Zachary said. "They protect us from evil."

Zachary telling News 6 that he hopes to do the same thing one day, trading in his Superman sweatshirt for a police uniform.
