1943: Arthur Ashe is born in Richmond, Virginia. During his professional tennis career, he reached the No. 1 ranking, won three Grand Slam titles and became the first, and only, black man to ever win singles titles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Australian Open. He died from AIDS-related pneumonia at the age of 49 on Feb. 6, 1993. Ashe had contracted HIV from a blood transfusion he received during heart bypass surgery in the late 1980s.
