1944: The USS Tang under Richard O'Kane, the top American submarine captain of World War II, is sunk by the ship's own malfunctioning torpedo, which curves around and strikes the ship. A total of 74 men were killed and nine survivors, including O'Kane, were picked up the next morning by a Japanese destroyer.
