1987: Actress Mary Astor, best known for her role opposite Humphrey Bogart in "The Maltese Falcon," dies of respiratory failure due to pulmonary emphysema at age 81 in Woodland Hills, California. Born Lucile Vasconcellos Langhanke, Astor began her acting career as a teen in the silent movies of the 1920s. She won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for 1941's "The Great Lie" and also appeared in movies such as "Dodsworth," "Red Dust," "The Palm Beach Story" and "Meet Me in St. Louis."
