1956: TAT-1, the first submarine transatlantic telephone cable system, is inaugurated. Running between Gallanach Bay, near Oban, Scotland, and Clarenville, Newfoundland, Canada, the cable carried 588 London-to-U.S. calls and 119 London-to-Canada calls in the first 24 hours of public service.
