Orange County Animal Shelter overcrowded after dogfighting ring bust

Shelter to hold adoption event in hopes of freeing up space for confiscated dogs

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Orange County Animal Services is holding an adoption event on Saturday in hopes of adopting out enough animals to make room to continue caring for the dogs found in the midst of the largest dogfighting ring in the city of Apopka's history.

Animal Services confiscated the 34 dogs, including six puppies, from a home late Tuesday at 209 W. Seventh St. near Orange Blossom Trail.

Twenty-six people were arrested in connection with a Central Florida dogfighting ring that included a treadmill, raccoon and up to 30 dogs, according to police.

Animal Services is asking for the community's help because the shelter was close to capacity prior to receiving the 34 additional dogs. Those interested in helping the shelter are encouraged to adopt one of the many other shelter pets currently available for adoption, officials said.

"We have many loving dogs and cats looking for families and placing these animals in forever homes would allow us more space to provide comfort for the animals taken in from the cruelty situation" said Dil Luther of OCAS.

The shelter will be reducing standard adoption fee for dogs and cats to $15 during their "Hot Dogs, Cool Cats" adoption promotion on Saturday. The shelter will also open additional hours at 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
