PINE HILLS, Fla. -

Orange County deputies are searching for the gunman who shot a 15-year-old boy in the back early Friday morning in an apparent robbery attempt.

Deputies said the boy was running away from the gunman at an apartment complex off of Golf Club Parkway when he was shot nearly a half a mile away from where he was found off of Silver Star Road.

"He had heard two gunshots," said  Lt. Mark Conner of OCSO. "At that time he started to feel a stinging in the back lower half of his body."

The shooting was reported at 1 a.m. after the teen was approached by a group of people driving down Brookswood Way. The victim said someone in the car yelled at him to stop and then started going through his pockets.

"Some individuals got out of the vehicle and started frisking him," Connor said. "At that time he got a little nervous and started running."

Seconds later, the teen was shot, deputies said. The teen said the car involved was an unknown model red Chevrolet.

The teen appears to be in stable condition and underwent surgery to get the bullet removed.
