Orange County deputy shoots, kills man in Avalon Park

FDLE investigating; deputy placed on leave

AVALAON PARK, Fla. – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating after an Orange County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man Sunday afternoon in Avalon Park.

Orange County deputies went to Perdido Street after 911 was called during an argument at the home. Deputies said a 47-year-old father inside the home had been threatening his family, and his wife and two adult children were hiding in a closet inside the home.

Deputies said when they arrived, the man was acting as if he was going to commit suicide before pointing his gun at a deputy as he left the home.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said the deputy fired one shot, fatally wounding the man.

"He came through the door armed with a shotgun. The deputy told him not to raise the gun. He went and raised it. The deputy fired one round," Demings said.

The deputy, who has been with the agency for six years, is on paid administrative leave, which is protocol in deputy-involved shootings.
