Orange County sheriff's deputies shoot man at hotel

Suspect plowed into deputies' cars, officials say

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Orange County sheriff's deputies shot and wounded a man who they say rammed their patrol cars while they attempted to arrest him at a hotel.

Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jeff Williamson said a tactical unit went to the Suburban Extended Stay hotel on Delegates Drive on Sunday to arrest a suspect they received a tip about earlier in the day.

According to investigators, when deputies surrounded the hotel, the suspect, 26-year-old Raphael T. Harrison, came out, got into his car and rammed into deputies' patrol cars several times in an attempt to escape. That's when two deputies shot at Harrison, hitting him multiple times.

An ambulance took Harrison to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery for his injuries. Doctors said he was in stable condition.

Williamson said Harrison was wanted on charges of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and failure to appear. Deputies assume he's from the Orlando area.

They expect he'll be taken to jail once he's out of the hospital, where he may face additional charges.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement continues to investigate, and the deputies involved in the shooting are on temporary leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
