The Orange County Sheriff's Office honored 10-year-old Sami Eljarsifi, who may have prevented a tragedy after reporting a student with a gun at a Hunter's Creek elementary school.

A 9-year-old boy was arrested for the incident back in September.

Deputies say the boy showed the gun, which was in a backpack loaded with other weapons, to Eljarsifi, who immediately alerted a teacher.

"[The boy] said [the gun's] just fake. Then when I went to go see it more it was metal. As soon as I saw it I thought someone was going to get shot, so I ran to a teacher," said Eljarsifi.

Sheriff Jerry Demings presented a commendation certificate to Eljarsifi at an awards ceremony held Tuesday.

"I helped my school, and I'm pretty honored," he said.

Eljarsifi told Local 6 he would do the exact same thing all over again.

OCSO also presented a medal to a police dog injured in the line of duty and several investigators involved in the Cady Way Trail murders investigation.
