Orlando 5th-grader starts for high school basketball team

Julian Newman stands 4 feet 5 inches tall

ORLANDO, Fla. – They say big things come in small packages, and an Orlando fifth-grader is proving that true.

Julian Newman, also known as "Handles" for his dribbling skills, stands 4 feet 5 inches tall, but he's the starting guard for Downey Christian's high school basketball team.

A video posted on YouTube (see below) shows the phenom playing against students much bigger than him.

Jamie Newman, Julian's father and the coach of Downey Christian, said Julian has been averaging 12 points a game, even though he's a foot less than most players.

"He has a tremendous skill level," Jamie Newman told Sports Illustrated.  "He has moves that even NBA players don't have.  He does stuff that hasn't been done before with the ball."

Downey Christian is not associated with the Florida High School Athletic Association, the state's governing body, so the school can't compete for state championships.

Julian aspires to play college basketball at Kentucky.
