ORLANDO, Fla. – After arriving to fanfare Monday night at Orlando International Airport, international megastar Kaka was introduced as the newest member of Orlando City Soccer Club.
The Orlando City Lions, which will become a Major League Soccer team next season, introduced Kaka, of Brazil, on Tuesday, the same day Team USA plays a win-or-go-home game versus Belgium in the World Cup.
Kaka, whose full name is Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, will sport jersey No. 10 next season for the Lions.
"We are very excited for this opportunity to live in America," said Kaka, referring to himself and his family. "But first, it's a professional project."
Orlando City owner Flavio Augusto da Silva knows there's no way his MLS expansion franchise could take the place of any Brazil club in the hearts of any Brazilian soccer fan. But with the signing of Kaka, da Silva hopes there's a little love.
"We want to be that second club," he said.
Kaka, 32, is expected to make an appearance at a watch party at Wall Street Plaza in downtown Orlando on Tuesday afternoon during halftime of the USA's World Cup match.
Kaka has nearly 20 million Twitter followers, more than LeBron James and Kobe Bryant combined.
