Orlando police to start using CopDots technology to combat property crimes

Residents can mark property with high-tech adhesive

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando Police Department said at news conference on Thursday they will be using CopDots, a new technology that will help combat property crimes.

CopDots, a high-tech adhesive that contains thousands of tiny dots with a unique and irremovable number on it, allows residents to mark their property.

"The individual numbers on this pen will be a DNA number that's registered to the person who actually purchases this pen here, and then they enter their contact information in an online database," said CopDots President Shawn Andreas.

CopDots will provide OPD with 1,000 samples that will be used within the city at various Neighborhood watch and community events.

"In addition to enforcing the law, crime prevention is always a priority. We always work with the residents to seek and utilize new technology such as CopDots to help reduce crime and keep Orlando a safe city," said OPD chief Paul Rooney.

There is no cost to OPD as all the equipment to support the technology is provided from the company.

"We are very honored to have Orlando PD, recognized as an agency that is a national leader in technology to utilize CopDots to fight property crimes," Andreas said. "Having Orlando PD involved will provide a roadmap for these other large agencies that are about to implement the program within their cities and ultimately contribute to their efforts in fighting property crimes within their communities."

Each pen is sold for about $30 and can mark about 40 to 50 items. You can buy CopDots at Lowe's Home Improvement.
