Second carjacking suspect arrested after Pine Hills standoff, police say

Man was beaten, carjacked near Orlando airport

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando police arrested a 17-year-old carjacking suspect after an hours-long standoff Thursday morning with the teenage boy, who refused to surrender, OPD officials said.

Two teens beat a man and carjacked him at gunpoint early Thursday at the SpringHill Suites near Orlando International Airport, police said.

Police said the man's money, phone and his Dodge Challenger were stolen.

An officer spotted the vehicle at South Semoran Boulevard and Lake Underhill Road, police said.

"The stolen vehicle was spotted heading onto the 408 and there was a pursuit that ended close to here off of Pine Hills Road, where the car crashed into a tree," Orlando Police spokeswoman Michelle Guido said.

One 17-year-old boy was arrested at the scene, while the second teen, Tremaine Sullen, 17, fled and was later captured by Orlando SWAT after a four-hour standoff at Pine Hills and Silver Star Roads, according to police.

"About 7 a.m. this morning OPD was informed that the outstanding suspect was in a house on Karl Lane and that's where they initially made contact," Guido said.

Officers tried talking to Sullen over a loud speaker and asked him to come outside with this hands up.

"He had been refusing to come out all this time," Guido said.

Sullen was captured as he tried to escape through the back of the house shortly before noon, according to a news release.

News 6 Reporter Mark Lehman was on the scene and said SWAT officers in tactical gear arrived hours after the standoff started. A gun was recovered at the residence, police said.

"Any time that we are in a situation where somebody is inside a home, won't come out, that is a very difficult situation for officers. They don't know what's on the other side of that door," Guido said. "That's why sometimes, I know you guys think things move slowly, but things work in a very deliberate way and we do that to ensure the safety of our officers, of the subjects, and of everybody in the community."

Sullen has been charged with carjacking with a firearm. The other boy is expected to face a similar charge.

Police said the second suspect was injured during the crash. He is being treated at the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
