VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Ormond Beach police were making an assault arrest on Wednesday morning, when something caused their patrol car window to shatter.
Police were near Pirates Cove Adventure Miniature Golf at 11:02 a.m., when someone flagged them down to report an assault.
One of the officers was inside the cruiser, using his laptop to run a report on the suspect's name, when the rear driver's side window shattered, Ormond
Beach police public information officer Keith Walker said.
The officer said he did not hear a gun shot, and investigators are trying to determine what happened.
"We can't find any projectiles, no bullet holes, no BBs, no items found right now," Ormond Beach Police public information Officer Keith Walker said.
Cardinal Drive was temporarily blocked off near A1A while police canvassed the area looking for clues to explain what happened.
Witnesses told News 6 that they saw the officers jump out of the car and draw their weapons after the incident.
Police said they have not found anything to indicate what caused the window to break.
"We're going to call it suspicious right now. We don't know if it was an intentional act or if a window just exploded," Walker said.
Officers also went to nearby businesses and hotels looking for surveillance video that may have caught the incident.
Residents said they felt uneasy knowing police don't have any leads.
"I don't like that at all. They're here to protect us. I'm hoping they can find whoever did it," resident Mark Pool said.
