Ormond Beach police search for thieves behind 13 car break-ins

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Ormond Beach police are warning residents to lock up after thieves broke into 13 unlocked cars over Mother's Day weekend.

"Obviously, it wasn't an isolated incident and I knew it was probably more wide spread," said Paula Spar.

Spar was one of the unlucky 13 car owners.

"It was just one of those situations where my hands were full and it was the end of the day," she said.

Spar forgot to lock her car and the crooks stole her work laptop that is filled with employees' information.

"Routing information and banking, but none of that was messed with," she said.

Spar said an officer responding to another call, stumbled upon Spar's password protected laptop and computer bag, near the subdivision's roundabout.

"It could have been a very, very bad situation," she said.

But, it wasn't just Spar's neighborhood that got hit. Thieves stole wallets, credit cards, cash and a gun from unlocked cars in the Spring Meadows subdivision too. One neighbor found some of those items near her home and returned what was left to the owner.

"It was a good thing the neighborhood came together. I mean we really did," said Spar.

Spar said folks on her street, Canterbury Woods, also did a great job finding and returning personal belongings. She said they are all now more diligent when it comes to locking their car doors.

"It only takes once," Spar said. "That won't happen again."

Ormond Beach police said the people responsible for the break-ins are still on the loose.
