Osceola County deputies investigate officer-involved shooting

Sheriff's Office: Man in motel room started shooting at deputies

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – The Osceola County Sheriff's Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place at a motel Saturday night.

Deputies received a call about shots fired at the Friendly Village Inn and Motel off Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway around 9:15 p.m.

Deputies said once they arrived, they began trying to call the occupants out of the room, but a man inside the room, Timothy Wohlfelder, 36, opened the door and fired shots at the deputies before retreating back inside the room, the Sheriff's Office said.

Wohlfelder opened the door again moments later and continued firing shots at deputies across the parking lot in the direction of other hotel rooms, deputies said. The deputies took cover.

Wohlfelder went back into the room once more before exiting it  and going to the parking lot with a pistol in one hand and a hatchet in the other, deputies said.

The deputies ordered Wohlfelder to put down his weapons but he refused, so they fired back and struck him three times.

Deputies said he was taken to Osceola Regional Hospital following the shooting and was last listed in stable condition.

A guest at the motel who was in a room located in the direction Wohlfelder was firing suffered a gunshot wound, deputies said. The guest was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition.

Deputies said Wohlfelder has been charged with three counts of attempted murder on a law enforcement officer. The incident is still under investigation and additional charges are pending, deputies said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also investigating since it was an officer-involved shooting, deputies said.
