Oviedo loses in a heartbreaker in GOTW

Oviedo led 16-14 at halftime

OVIEDO, Fla. – The Clickorlando.com game of the week saw yours truly head to a 7A Regional Final game between the Oviedo Lions and the Tallahassee Lincoln Trojans.

Oviedo is coming off of two playoff overtime victories and were more than confident heading into tonight's match-up against perennial powerhouse Lincoln.

Lincoln came into tonight having beaten Fleming Island and Gainesville's Buchholz high in the first and second rounds of the playoffs, respectively.

As soon as I arrived on the Oviedo High School grounds, I could just feel the electricity! It was flowing throughout the whole city of Oviedo, throughout all of Central Florida!

You literally could not find a parking spot, it was such a great sight to see.

The National anthem played, and kickoff was here for this 7A regional final match-up.

Wes Allen's Oviedo squad seemed to have the upper hand emotionally and physically in the beginning of the game. Lincoln had 3 offensive plays in the first quarter.

Early in the first, Oviedo forced Lincoln into a safety to lead 2-0 lead. Oviedo then capitalized on a Lincoln turnover and junior QB Chris Davis took a QB keeper in for the score.

The Lions would be up 9-0 halfway through the first.

However, Lincoln would not stay down. On its third play from scrimmage, RB Ben Robinson took the handoff and scooted down the field for the TD. The first quarter would see Oviedo up 9-7.

Think of the second quarter as a battle of two titans and neither one would give an inch. Offensively, two scores came in this quarter, one by each team.

Lincoln went up 14-9 after an early TD from QB Cameron Joseph when he hit Taj Williams with a beautiful lob corner pass that made everyone appreciate just how talented Williams is.

Oviedo, with about a minute left to go in the second quarter, would get another spectacular TD run from QB Chris Davis to put his Lions out in front at the break, 16-14.

Lincoln received the opening second half kickoff and put together a nice drive capping of the five minute or so drive with another TD run by Robinson.

Now the Trojans were out in front early in the third, 21-16.

But those pesky Lions would not stay down. QB Chris Davis once again faked the hand-off to his running back and ba-rumbled and stumbled all the way into the Lions end zone for the touchdown.

Another score, meant another lead change.

Oviedo was now out in front 23-21 with roughly five minutes left to go in the third quarter.

A couple of strong Trojan defensive plays led to Lincoln to getting the ball back with about two minutes left to go in the third quarter.

I could come up with a cheesy cliche, but I think you already know what is around the corner, a touchdown and... a lead change.

Lincoln's QB Cameron Joseph ran a dazzling play action pass and found a wide open Myles Gaines for the touchdown.

Lincoln led 28-23 going into the fourth quarter.

Hold on to your hats, folks. Here we go.

The fourth quarter saw back and forth possessions until of course with surprisingly zero offense, that is of course until the last minute of the game.

Oviedo would punch in the pigskin for the touchdown from about the one yard line to take the lead 29-28.

Lion's head coach Wes Allen then made the decision to have his Lions go for a 2-point conversion to be up by a field goal over the visiting Trojans.

The Lions were not successful on its attempt.

But here is what the game will be remembered for. Take away the 47 minutes before because the last minute is all that both teams will remember of this game.

With roughly a minute on the clock, there is no way the Oviedo Lions could pull out another heart stopper again like they have been doing in this years playoffs, could they?

Down 29-28, Lincoln had to go to the air, which they did.

With about 50 seconds left, QB Cameron Joseph hooks up Reggie Davis for a remarkable TD! About the time Davis crossed the goaline, you could hear the air being sucked out of the Oviedo crowd.

The end result would be Lincoln winning the game 35-29 and advancing to the state semi's and breaking the hearts of Lion nation in Oviedo.

This was an instant classic, no doubt about it. Keep your heads up Oviedo fans, you have a great team coming back next year and you have so much to proud of this year!

Congratulations to the Tallahassee Trojans, who will make their way back to Central Florida next week for a chance to play in the FHSAA 7A championship. But first they must go through Osceola Kissimmee. Osceola will be hosting that game next Friday and kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Oviedo finishes its season with a record of 11-2.

What a night of high school football, what a game.
