Palm Bay high-schooler stabs other student during fight at lunch

Teen arrested on felony charges, other girl involved charged with misdemeanor

PALM BAY, Fla. – Palm Bay police arrested a 16-year-old student after they say she stabbed another student in the school cafeteria with a kitchen knife during a fight.

Kadiann Toni Derrell, 16, has been charged with aggravated battery and possession of a weapon on school campus in the Tuesday incident.

Police said Derrell and another girl were involved in a verbal fight that had been ongoing for several weeks at Heritage High School. On Tuesday, the girl went into the bathroom of the cafeteria and told her friends to tell Derrell to come to the bathroom to fight her, according to the police report.

When Derrell refused to come to the bathroom, the girl went up to Derrell's table in the cafeteria and struck her in the face with her hand, police said.

Police said as the girl began to walk away, Derrell pulled a 4-inch kitchen knife from her purse and stabbed the other girl in the shoulder during a fight.

While police were speaking with Derrell she said she brought the knife to school "steaming from the argument the previous day" and Derrell said her intention was to stab to the girl, according to the report.

Both girls were arrested. Derrell was charged with a felony and the other girl involved was charged with with a battery, a misdemeanor charge.
