Parents protest potential Brevard school closures

ORLANDO, Fla. – Parents in Brevard County are taking action upon hearing that several public schools may be closed in attempts to save money.

The school board will likely vote on the closing of several or all schools in January, but parents have made fliers, posters, a Facebook page and other informational material to educate residents of the potential closures.

The superintendent has not yet fully explained why the particular schools were chosen nor what other options may exist. He is expected to make his presentation on the matter at a school board meeting on Tuesday.

"It is by no means a done deal," said Karen Procter, president of the Parent Teacher Association, "We have to make smart decisions on how to change their minds."

The proposed closures are a result of residents' voting down of a new tax, as well as declining property values and rollbacks in tax rates that have meant less money going toward education.
