Pedicab driver accused of raping customer in Volusia County
George Christopher Brainard arrested on sex battery charge
A 28-year-old pedicab driver was arrested on allegations of driving a customer into a wooded area near the Daytona International Speedway and raping her.
George Christopher Brainard, of Ormond Beach, was arrested Friday on charges of sexual battery.
According to a charging affidavit, a 27-year-old woman said she was picked up by a pedicab driver, later identified as Brainard, at International Speedway Boulevard and West Road. She said she wanted to be taken to the 2600 block of International Speedway, but Brainard instead rode into a wooded area in the 2000 block of Bayless Boulevard and told the woman that if she performed oral sex on him he would not charge her for the ride, the affidavit stated.
The victim said she told Brainard "no," but he pulled her from the seat of the cab, pushed her to the ground and demanded she perform oral sex, according to the affidavit. The woman said she again refused and he forced himself on her, the affidavit said.
The woman said she tried to crawl away, but Brainard grabbed her leg, pulled her pants down and raped her, officials said.
According to the affidavit, the woman said she crawled away after being raped and Brainard left in an unknown direction.
Another pedicab driver said he heard someone screaming for help, found the woman and called for help. He said Brainard works for Readi Pedi in Orlando.
"She was like crying he raped me help me. I mean all kinds of things and screaming," said Nick Colavito, who rescued the woman.
Colavito said he was taking passengers to a nearby Hooters when he saw Brainard's pedicab empty near the woods. On his way back, minutes later, Colavito said he heard the victim's screams.
"I just happened to be going by there and dragged her out of the woods. Thank God she safe now in a sense. But the damage was already done for her," he said.
Three witnesses, including the other pedicab driver, said they saw the woman with Brainard, who was located by law enforcement officers in a nearby parking lot.
Brainard said oral sex and sexual intercourse occurred, but he claimed the woman was the aggressor and he was the victim.
The woman was taken to Halifax Medical Center for a sexual assault examination, and Brainard was arrested and taken to jail on $25,000 bond.
