Man, 20, arrested pilotless boat crashes onto Daytona Beach

36-foot boat runs aground at full throttle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A man was arrested after a stolen boat ended up on a beach with no one on board, Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue personnel said.

A 36-foot vessel ran aground around 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Officials said beach safety officers cleared the area when they spotted the boat moving at a high rate of speed toward shore.

Once the vessel hit land, the officers went into the cabin to shut off the engine and propeller. Officials said there was no one on board upon searching the vessel.

The boat was apparently stolen from a marina in Daytona. Police said the suspect, Jonathan Race, 20, was located and placed under arrest.

Race was charged with two counts of burglary of a structure or conveyance and one count of grand theft of a motor vehicle, according to jail records. He was expected to appear in court Sunday morning.

It was determined no other persons were involved in the incident. Officials said the owner was contacted.
