Pizza delivery driver shot, killed man in Brevard County robbery attempt, deputies say

Lorenza Kelly Jr. shot dead in West Melbourne

WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. – A pizza delivery driver shot and killed a man outside a Brevard County motel late Friday when the man tried to rob him, deputies said.

Fredrick Lorenza Kelly Jr., 32, was shot in the parking lot of the Days Inn motel at 4500 West New Haven in West Melbourne shortly before midnight, the Brevard County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said Bryon Park, 54, of Palm Bay, had just returned to his vehicle after delivering a pizza to a room at the motel when he was approached by Kelly, who was brandishing a large knife.

Deputies said Kelly demanded money from Park and threatened to kill him if he did not comply.

Park then retrieved a firearm he carries in his vehicle and fired one shot at Kelly, deputies said.  Kelly was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.

"Preliminary evidence in the case demonstrates that the intended victim of the robbery acted in self-defense while being robbed by a violent criminal who was armed with a knife," Brevard Sheriff Wayne Ivey said.  "The suspect in this investigation was released from prison in 2009 after serving a reduced sentence for similar violent crimes."

Deputies said Kelly had a lengthy violent criminal history that included armed robbery, aggravated battery and false imprisonment.
