ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Ormond Beach police have arrested one culprit and are searching for another who they say carjacked a homeowner who left their car running in driveway to take their son to school.
Police said the Garry Taylor started his Hyundai Sante Fe in the driveway on Aston Circle and when he came out with his child, a man drove off with his car, work trailer and another car, a silver 4-door car, followed behind it.
"I didn't even know at that time someone was in the vehicle. I saw the silver car, hear someone yelling 'go go go' and that's when I realized someone is in my car," said Taylor.
Taylor had left the SUV running, unattended, to warm it up on a cold morning. When the carjacker tried to drive off in the SUV, Taylor held on.
"I caught the trailer just as it left the road there and I have a ladder there. I grabbed 2 rungs, screaming and yelling, 'get out of my truck,'" said Taylor. "I wasn't thinking, it was just reaction, hoping they see me hanging here. I thought they'd stop but that wasn't the case."
After about 15 feet, Taylor let go and skidded on the concrete, causing severe scraping to his arm and feet.
The car was spotted by a motorcycle cop and when the culprits saw the officer, one jumped in the stolen car and tried to run over the officer, clipping him and knocking him down as he was trying to get out of the way. The officer then fired one shot and hit the driver side door.
The culprit drove the car to a home and then abandoned it. Police arrested Devonte Smokes, 19, at the home on Sante Fe Ave. According to Volusia County Jail records, Smokes has been booked into the Volusia County jail 3 times in the past 2 years for felony battery, grand theft, burglary, and prowling, among other charges.
The stolen car was found in Daytona Beach, but the driver is still on the loose, police said. Two handguns were found in the front passenger compartment of the other car
No other details have been released and the investigation is ongoing.
