MELBOURNE, Fla. - A nearly 7-foot homeless man accused in the attempted abduction of a female jogger in Wickham Park on Sunday remains in jail, Florida Today reports.
John Patrick Fabian, 48, who police said has been charged with similar crimes in 2008, was being held Tuesday in the Brevard County jail in lieu of $150,000 bond.
According to his arrest report, Fabian, who is 6 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 250 pounds, was hiding in some bushes next to the paved jogging path that the woman was running on.
She told police that Fabian said to her, "Hello, how are you?" and then leaned forward, stretched out his arms and lunged at her.
The woman managed to evade him and ran to her car, police said. As she was driving away, she saw a Melbourne police officer who was patrolling nearby and notified him of the incident.
"If he did grab hold of her, he would easily have overpowered her," Sgt. Sheridan Shelley said.
Shelley said Fabian watched the woman as she jogged and made some comments. During her second lap, he was hiding in the bushes, and on the third lap he tried to abduct her, according to police.
The alleged victim, who was visibly shaken, told police she feared for her life because she believed the man was going to pull her into the bushes and kill her.
Police said Fabian was charged in 2008 with burglary after breaking into a woman's home in Melbourne. That same year, he was charged with attempting to sexually assault a woman in the presence of her 4-year-old child on the beach in Satellite Beach.
"He is definitely exhibiting a pattern," Shelley said. "There is a pattern there."
