PORT ORANGE, Fla. -

A robbery suspect was shot and killed by law enforcement officials Wednesday on Interstate 95 in Volusia County, according to officials.

The incident started as an armed robbery and resulted in the suspect being killed, forcing officials to close all northbound lanes of I-95 at exit 256, which is State Road 421 in Port Orange.  One lane reopened around 1:30 p.m.

Police identified the deceased suspect as Luke Daniel Castello, 22, of Daytona Beach.

Daytona Beach police was searching for the green minivan that Castello was driving in response to an armed robbery at the Heritage Inn motel and spotted the car by the Walmart. Police said officers were called in for back up to pull the car over on Duwnlawton Avenue when it fled, exceeding 80 mph and getting on I-95 northbound.

Police said the car lost control on I-95 and crashed. As six officers approached, Castello showed a weapon and officers fired several rounds, killing him. It's not clear if Castello was in or out of his car.

No officers were hurt in the altercation and it's not clear if any are on leave as the investigation continues.

FHP and Port Orange police are investigating the incident. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will also investigate.

In the armed robbery just before the crash, Castello used zip ties to bound his friends, rob them of more than $1,000 and stole 2 loaded firearms, then threatened to kill them before taking off with one of the victim's vehicles.

Records show Castello was arrested three times in 2013 and was slapped with more than half a dozen charges.
