Police: Car burglary suspects hide from police in trash cans

Police: thieves steal car in Melbourne, crash in Palm Bay, hide in trash cans

PALM BAY, Fla. – A Palm Bay neighborhood turned into a crime scene Thursday when police say car burglary suspects were found hiding in trash cans.

Police say the burglars stole a Dodge Charger from a used car dealership, Greenwise Motors in Melbourne after 5 a.m.

The car crashed on Riviera Drive in Palm Bay after police say it ran over stop sticks.

Police say they arrested one of the people in the car, but three other men ran three-quarters of a mile into the Riviera Key neighborhood.

Neighbor Jennifer Moyer was just waking up when she says she took her dog outside for a walk.

"I heard all the commotion outside," said Moyer. "I was just kind of nervous about getting inside and keeping my daughter and my dog safe. I ran back inside, and I saw the neighbor across the street point to the garbage cans. So the cops went over to the garbage cans next door."

Police say the thieves were hiding in three trash cans side-by-side.

Police say the men got out, then failed at breaking into a home, ran through Moyer's backyard and were finally arrested.

Part of a backyard fence was destroyed during the chase.

Melbourne Police, Palm Bay Police and the Brevard County Sheriff's Office all worked together during the chase.

Police Thursday afternoon did not tell News 6 the names of the four men arrested.
