Police crack down on motorists at bus stop after News 6 report

Concerned parent contacted News 6 about problem

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando police are cracking down on drivers illegally passing school buses after a News 6 report highlighted one potentially dangerous bus stop.

Angii Rosa contacted News 6 after she said her daughter was almost hit by a car while crossing the street Wednesday morning to catch her school bus.

"My daughter was right there next to the car, and the car just decided to go," Rosa said.

Rosa says she recorded several cars ignoring the school bus flashing lights and stop signs at the corner of Metro Park Circle and Old Park Lane in Metrowest.

Less than 24 hours after the report aired on News 6, police were at the intersection, handing out tickets.

"It's important for the community to be our eyes and ears and tell us where a problems are occurring so we can address them," said Orlando police Sgt. Jeffrey Blye.

No drivers were caught passing school buses early Thursday, but several drivers were pulled over for running a stop sign.

"They need to learn that they need to stop," said Rosa. "Kids need to have the adults look after them, and if they're not looking after them, they're going to get hit."

Rosa said safety is her number one concern and said the quick response by police is overwhelming.

"The result today is absolutely awesome. I mean, (News 6) completely got results," said Rosa.

Police said anyone who catches drivers passing school buses illegally should call the Orlando Police Traffic Hotline at 407-246-2906.
