Police: Dead baby prompts investigation

17-year-old teen found bleeding in St. Cloud

ST. CLOUD, Fla. – A St. Cloud teen is in serious condition Wednesday after police discovered her bleeding and a dead fetus, which police later started describing as a "dead baby."

According to the police department, a 911 caller stated that her friend was "pregnant and was bleeding." St. Cloud police found the 17-year-old at the Neptune Bay apartments just after 9 a.m., covered in blood and discovered a dead "infant."

Local 6 has learned that the baby was found in a bag in a closet, causing them to believe the baby's death was "suspicious." Investigators said the teen mother could have had a miscarriage, but said they haven't ruled out the possibility the teen may have secretly tried to perform an abortion.

The teen was airlifted to a hospital. Police said she's doing OK and has cooperated with the investigation. Detectives have also spoken to the baby's father, who is also a juvenile to figure out what happened.

St. Cloud police said the teen sent a text message to a friend, who went to the 17-year-old's home and called 911.  They were the only two people at the apartment when police arrived, according to authorities.

The teen's mother was not aware that her daughter was pregnant, St. Cloud police said.

A search warrant was obtained Wednesday afternoon, but police have not released any other details.

Neighbors told Local 6 the 17-year-old and her mother had just moved into the apartment complex about two weeks ago.
