Police: Hit-and-run driver kills man in wheelchair

Orlando police search for clues

ORLANDO, Fla. – Police are searching for a driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed a man in a wheelchair.

The crash happened at LB McLeod Road and Bruton Boulevard in Orlando just before 11 a.m. Sunday.

Police said the 59-year-old victim was crossing LB McLeod when he was hit.

"I can't believe someone would hit someone and run as he did. It was awful to witness.  He hit them hard and he flipped. The man had blood coming from his head and we tried to comfort him as we were on our way to church," said one witness.

The car was found in a neighborhood down the street from the scene.

Michael Winkler's wife Janita Winkler can't believe her husband was killed two days before their 48th wedding anniversary.

"Police officer said he didn't make it and I didn't believe him. And then I just lost it," she said.

Michael Winkler was handicapped by a stroke he suffered 18 years ago. His daughter, Treena, said the hardest part is not knowing why the driver left.

"Just the thought of him being scared hurt and on the floor. Someone just leaving him there like he was nothing," Treena said.

Police said they don't have any leads in the case.
