KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Police detectives are investigating a homicide in a Kissimmee neighborhood after a man was shot and killed, according to Kissimmee police.
Officers were called Wednesday night to a home on Jessa Drive, near Simpson Road and east of the Florida Turnpike, where they found a man dead.
Police identified the victim as 47-year-old Jorge Luis Velez. He did not live at the home.
Velez is a convicted felon, who served two years in prison for burglary and trafficking stolen property charges, according to Florida Department of Corrections records.
A neighbor told News 6 that he saw a woman who was carrying a child running out of the home and screaming for help.
"She came out pretty freaked out," Carlos Ramirez said. "It wasn't a pretty situation. I knew something bad had happened, especially when I saw a cop sprinting. He wasn't running, he was just giving his all. You could tell when he was running."
Ramirez said he did not hear any gunshots, but he heard a car taking off from the scene before police arrived.
It's not known if the woman is connected to the homicide.
Neighbors said a man, woman and two children live at the home.
Investigators were spotted removing what appeared to be a rifle and aluminum tubing from the home.
After sunrise this morning, an officer responded to Jessa Drive to recover a single round of ammunition in a patch of grass directly across the street from the crime scene. It’s unknown if it' is related to the homicide.
