Orlando police officers shoot, kill man carrying 'simulated firearm'

A man carrying a "simulated firearm" is shot by Orlando police officers.

ORLANDO, Fla. – A man walking along Orange Blossom Trail while carrying a gun that was later determined to be a "simulated firearm" was shot and killed by police early Sunday after he refused to drop his weapon, officials said.

The Orlando Police Department said it received a call at 2:07 a.m. Sunday about a man wearing a dark shirt and dark pants walking up and down Orange Blossom Trail while carrying a chrome gun.

The first officer at the scene called for assistance, saying that he had the suspect at gunpoint, authorities said.

Assisting officers responded and made contact with the suspect, later identified as Charlin Charles, 25. Police said officers gave verbal commands for Charles to put his gun down, but he raised the firearm and two officers fired their weapons, striking him.

Charles was taken to a hospital where he later died.

No officers were injured. The officers involved were identified on Monday as Officer Michael Ragsdale, who has been with OPD since March 2015; Officer Joseph Imburgio, who has been with OPD since August 2012; Officer Alyce Payne, who was been with OPD since January 2007; and Officer Nicholas Metzger, who was been with OPD since December 2013.

The fatal shooting remains under investigation. The officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave as standard procedure.
