WINTER GARDEN, Fla. - Winter Garden police arrested the parents of five children they said were left home alone Friday evening.
Officials said an officer from Winter Garden police was driving by a home when he noticed water coming from the garage and flooding into the driveway.
The officer decided to investigate and when he knocked on the door, he was greeted by kids who were home alone.
Police said the oldest child was told to stay home and take care of the younger children by feeding them and changing diapers.
The officer said he noticed mold on the walls and part of the roof of the garage was collapsing.
The officer also said he saw the flooring and carpets were saturated from water, and a back window was broken with glass laying on the floor. He also said the house smelled like mold.
A code enforcement officer was called to investigate and after inspecting the he determined that due to the intense flooding of the home, coupled with power in the home, there was a risk of electrical shock and other hazards and recommended cutting off the power.
The oldest child was given a number by the parents, which police determined was to a McDonald's restaurant in Ocoee.
Police said the parents -- identified as Lafayette Martin and Cierra Williams -- returned home about three hours later and had another child with them.
Both Martin and Williams said a man by the name of Robert had been staying with them and he was supposed to be watching the kids, according to police.
Police said they didn't know any other information about Robert and they did not have a phone number for him but Robert and Martin worked together at McDonald's.
Williams said she was aware of the flooding and mold and had been trying to get it taken care of through the landlord and the children were sleeping in the front room because of it, police said.
Police decided they had enough evidence to arrest Martin and Williams and charge them both with child neglect.
