Port Canaveral authority parking investigated by FDLE

Parking lot employees were pocketing money from cruise passengers, investigation finds

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – Four employees were terminated and three put on administrative leave after the Port Authority at Port Canaveral requested an internal investigation into its parking operations.

Port officials say the Florida Department of Law Enforcement started its investigation nine months ago after anonymous tips from employees to the port CEO that employees were pocketing cash from cruise passengers parking in the lots.

The investigation led to improved oversight procedures at cruise terminal parking booths, along with construction beginning on a new automated parking access and revenue collection system at cruise terminals that Port Commissioners approved last year, according to a release from port officials.

The Port Authority also said its employees completed new code of conduct training. It's not clear why the four employees were fired and three were placed on administrative leave.

The FDLE investigation may also lead to additional action, officials said.
