Poultry prices go up again, Bureau of Labor stats show

Cost of whole chicken rises to $1.53 a pound

Chickens may not be able to fly, but their prices sure are going sky high. The price of chicken has reached $1.53 per pound as of October 2013, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Compare this to October of 2003 when chickens only cost 1.02 a pound. That's more than a 50 percent increase in 10 years.

As amateur poultry chefs around the country gear up for Thanksgiving and Christmas, they might be figuratively tightening their belts even as they literally loosen them to accommodate big holiday meals.
