Power cut to Deltona couple's home during burglary

Homeowner finds electric meter torn from wall outside, shed ransacked

DELTONA, Fla. – Volusia County sheriff's investigators are searching for the person who cut power to a couple's home Monday night, ransacked their shed and tried to break into their home.

Deputies said they responded to the home on the 200 block of Highland Drive just after 11 p.m.

Homeowner Kevin Lane told News 6 loud sounds woke him from a deep sleep.

"I heard a crash," he said.

He said that after the crash, the power went out inside his home and he heard someone in the backyard.

He said he thinks he scared that person away when he turned on his flashlight.

Outside, he said, he found out why he had lost power.

"The electric meter was pulled right out of there," Lane said. "The panel was off, and it was laying on the ground. I didn’t know what to think. How could that happen? And that’s when I used my flashlight, and I turned toward my shed and that window was smashed."

He said he opened the door to his shed to find it had been ransacked.

"When I went in here, my tools and everything were pulled out of the shelves, and everything pulled from one of the benches," he said. "I mean, they were all over the place."

He said the only things missing were some old drill bits and a straw hat.

Lane showed News 6 where his screen door had been cut, and he said he found some of his tools by the back door. He said he thinks whoever was in the backyard was using the tools to break into his home.

Who would do this? Lane said he wants to find the answer.

"It just didn't make any sense whatsoever to me," Lane said. "It still doesn't."
