Pregnant woman beaten with hammer, sexually assaulted, Daytona police say

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A seven months pregnant woman was attacked with a hammer and sexually assaulted in a domestic violence incident, according to Daytona Beach police.

According to the police report, a 34-year-old man broke into the victim’s apartment with a hammer at 2:57 a.m. Tuesday before sexually battering the mother of two.

A neighbor who witnessed the break in saw the suspect sitting outside the apartment, then begin hitting a window next to the front door with a hammer.

The victim was sleeping in her apartment when she was awakened by the sound of breaking glass and saw the man entering her bedroom with a hammer, the police report said.

The suspect struck the victim with the hammer multiple times before she ran out of the apartment, she told police.

The suspect followed the victim behind the apartment where he sexually assaulted her, the police report said.

A neighbor told Daytona Beach police that the suspect pulled the victim to the ground by her hair, hitting her and ripping off her clothes.

Police arrived and took the suspect into custody.

The victim was taken to the hospital and treated for possible injuries to her unborn child.

The Daytona Beach man is charged with sexual battery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, resisting an officer without violence, armed burglary and trespassing. He is being held without bond in the Volusia County jail.

After his arrest, police discovered an active warrant against him Volusia County.

News 6 is not identifying the suspect or the victim because it a sexual assault case.
