Pregnant woman killed in crash in St. Cloud

Teen driver of 2nd car, passenger taken to hospital

ST. CLOUD, Fla. – A 23-year-old pregnant woman was killed in a crash in St. Cloud early Thursday when another vehicle struck her car, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Kristen Nicole Wright, of St. Cloud, who was 7-months pregnant, died in the crash, which occurred around 1 a.m. on U.S. 192 near Pine Grove Road.

According to the FHP, Wright was headed east on U.S. 192 when her 2001 Oldsmobile Alero was T-boned by a 2011 Kia Sorento driven by 17-year-old Vanessa Santiago Sanchez, of St. Cloud.

Troopers said Sanchez failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign while trying to cross U.S. 192 and hit Wright's car, which overturned in the crash.

Crews tried to save Wright, who troopers said was not wearing a seat belt, and her baby but couldn't.

"They did everything they could possibly do to make entry into that car to maybe even save the child.  Unfortunately, the medical director for Osceola Regional at that point indicated that there was nothing that they were able to do at that time," FHP Trooper Steven Montiero said.

Sanchez and her passenger, 18-year-old Hannah McNeil, of Kissimmee, were taken to Osceola Regional Hospital with serious injuries.  The FHP report says both were wearing seat belts and alcohol was not a factor in the wreck.

U.S. 192 was closed in both directions for hours after the crash.

An investigation is ongoing.
