SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Department of Health has issued a 60-day rabies alert for the Geneva area of Seminole County.
This alert is issued in response to a bobcat that tested positive in the area during the past week.

Rabies, which is present in the wild animal population and transmitted by saliva, is a disease of the nervous system that can cause paralysis and is fatal to warm blooded animals and humans
Rabies activity has been higher than usual in Seminole County since the beginning of the year, according to the DOH.
People in the Geneva area and even outside are urged to be aware of the situation and take necessary precautions in order to avoid rabies transmission. The DOH recommends avoiding all wildlife contact, make sure all pets have current rabies vaccinations, secure garbage and not leaving pet food outside.
