Palm Coast man found in burning vehicle identified
Florida Highway Patrol investigates
Rescue workers responding to what they at first thought might have been a brush fire in Palm Coast found a burning vehicle with someone inside, according to Flagler County deputies.
Florida Highway Patrol reports that a 1998 Volvo Passenger vehicle was traveling westbound on Central Avenue near Brookhaven Thursday at 11 a.m. when it drove off the highway into the woods and ignited.
The car was believed to have caught fire because of a rupture in the fuel line or fuel tank, according to troopers.
FHP said when the car was engulfed in flames and the driver, 71-year-old Henry Cornish, was trapped inside. He died at the scene, troopers said, and the incident is being investigated as a traffic crash.
FHP said they believe some sort of health issue caused Cornish to run off of the road, but it's not clear what exactly the issue was.
Local 6 news helicopter Sky 6 flew over the scene as troopers marked the wooded area around the charred vehicle.
