Orlando Magic name Frank Vogel head coach

Announcement comes after Scott Skiles' resignation last week

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Magic officially announced Frank Vogel as the team's new coach on Friday.

The former head coach of the Indiana Pacers will take over the job after Scott Skiles announced his resignation last week.

“While we were conducting our search, it became very evident that Frank (Vogel) is a terrific fit for our organization,” said General Manager Rob Hennigan. “He is a strong, hard-working and experienced leader, who will continue to instill smart, physical, unselfish and defensive-minded basketball in our group.  We welcome him into the Magic family, as we move forward in a positive direction.”

According to ESPN, the Orlando Magic were debating between Vogel, 42, and Magic assistant coach Adrian Griffin,

In order to get Vogel the Magic had to move quickly. The Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets and New York Knicks all had strong interest in the coach.

Vogel coached the Indiana Pacers for six years and lead them to a .580 winning percentage, which included five playoff and two conference finals appearances.

Vogel becomes the 13th head coach in franchise history.
