Bear nicknamed Smokey Jr. by fire officials

TAMPA, Fla. – A Florida bear cub rescued from a brush fire in Lake County is thriving at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo.

The bear, named Smokey Jr. by Lake County fire officials, has more than doubled his weight from 6 to 15 pounds.

At 12 weeks old veterinarians report that Smokey Jr. has a healthy appetite and has no visible marks remaining from the fire. They say his behavior is also consistent with that of a wild bear.

Smokey Jr. is being monitored with minimal interaction to reduce likelihood of habituation. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will determine his future home. It is hoping Smokey Jr. will be prepared for release later this year.
