The hallucinogenic drug LSD could help alcoholics give up alcohol, according to researchers.
The analysis compared data from six trials and more than 500 patients. Researchers found there was a "significant beneficial effect" on alcohol abuse, according to the BBC. That beneficial effect lasted several months after the single dose of LSD was taken.

LSD brings with it its own dangers, including anxiety, panic attacks, flashbacks or users placing themselves in harm's way because of hallucinations. Some of these effects can last long after the drug was taken.
Still, researchers suggest more regular doses of the drug may lead to a sustained benefit for alcoholics.
"Curing alcohol dependency requires huge changes in the way you see yourself," said one researcher. "That's what LSD does."
