Residents want safety measures taken after teen struck, killed by SunRail train in Sanford

SANFORD, Fla. – Officials say the area where a teen was hit by a SunRail train could soon have some enforcement to stop foot traffic.

"It's a good idea, if they could sign off on it and get it done," one resident said.

A memorial lies just feet away from where 13-year-old Marcees Kilpatrick was hit and killed on the train tracks Friday.

"I just had a train report they hit a child on McCraken Road," the 911 caller said. "They don't know if the child is alive or not. They said it might have been a teenager, 12 or 13 years old."

The path is now a tragic reminder for people that live nearby.

"I'm sad it happened," another resident said. "Kids, they're curious. And just like he wandered out there, somebody else can wander out there, so to stop all, put a wall up there. It would be safe for everybody."

The Florida Department of Transportation said its taking the recent accident seriously and looking into safety enhancements.

Some proposed enhancements include fences near the tracks.

"It's very important to do that for the protection of the community," said Peter Etoh, who lives nearby. "There are kids that pass that way and it's very dangerous to pass through that."

Some people News 6 spoke to said it's not enough -- if people are going to cut through, they'll find a way, even if they have to jump over a fence.

"It's one of those hit or miss things," a resident said. "It's one of those things where  parents have to go back and talk to their kids."

A vigil for Kilpatrick will be held Tuesday night.
